The present norms do not specify the death cover according to the tenure of Ulip. According to existing norms, the minimum sum assured for a single premium should be 125 per cent of the single premium, while it should be five times the annualised premium for a regular premium irrespective of the tenure chosen. With the opening of the insurance sector, Ulips have emerged as popular investment products contributing more than 70 per cent of the new business premium income.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday commended Indian financial sector regulators for doing a "world-class job" and bringing greater transparency into the system. Underlining that she is not against questioning or critiquing regulators, Sitharaman said there is a need to be "extremely conscious" about contributions made by them as well. Speaking at the Financial Express Best Banks Awards, the finance minister said, "I strongly recommend that facts are taken on board before we discuss anything to do with the regulators, strictly speaking."

Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) February 8 for the first time ever crossed the Rs 7 trillion market capitalisation, as the stock price of state-owned insurer hit a new high of Rs 1,144,45, on rallying 10 per cent on the BSE. The board of directors of the Corporation are scheduled to meet today i.e. February 8, 2024, to consider a proposal for declaration of interim dividend for the financial year 2023-24 (FY24). The board will also consider and approve the unaudited financial results for the quarter and nine-month period ended on December 31, 2023.

Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) has received the insurance regulator's nod for time till January-end 2023 to dispose of investments in pension, group and life annuity funds, which do not fall in the "approved investment" category. Had the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (Irdai) denied more time to transfer the investments to shareholders' fund at amortised cost, the loss that would have accrued in the profit and loss account (shareholders account) would have been Rs 5,365.83 crore as of September 2021, LIC said in its draft red herring prospectus (DRHP).

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (Irda) may allow up to 25 per cent investment to a single group of companies as part of the group exposure norms for unit-linked insurance plans (Ulips).While in the normal course, the regulator is likely to cap the investment of such polices at 20 per cent, the ceiling can be relaxed by another 5 per cent with prior approval of the board through what is called discretionary limits.
